V.A. (SONNY) JULIAN, JR.
He was Born May 17, 1928 in Independence, Missouri.  His parents were living at 18th & Wabesa.  His mother, Alice May Crane Ek Julian, a Registered Nurse, graduated from the Independence Sanitarium & Hospital and his father, Virgil A. Julian, Sr., a Member of the Missouri Bar, graduated from the Kansas City School of Law (UMKC).
 
In May, 1929, his parents moved to 1705 Appleton, Independence, Missouri to be close to the Englewood RLDS Church and lived there for over 50 years.
 
He attended Bristol Elementary School, Northeast Junior and Senior High Schools, graduating from High School in June, 1945.  While attending high school, He carried a 6-0 scholastic program all three years in Senior High School, he was a member of the ROTC Unit and was the physics laboratory assistant to L. A. Pinkney, the Instructor.  He was the projector operator and film maintenance person for the visual education department.  He was also a Member of the Hi-Y program, the Benton Literary Society and the Mother Beta Chapter, of the Order of DeMoLay.
 
He joined the U.S. Naval Reserve as an Aviation Cadet (V-5 Program) on July 2, 1945, attended Kansas State College, Pittsburg, Kansas and Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire and served at Great Lakes Naval Facility in the Steam Engineering Training Unit and the Supply Unit, being honorably discharged on December 25, 1946.  He continued in the Active Naval Reserve until December 25, 1951. His military Serial Number was 7671407.
 
In 1946 he returned to Independence, and attended Kansas City Junior College and Kansas City University  (KCU) receiving a BA Degree in Economics in June, 1951.  He is a Life Member of the University of Kansas City Alumni Association. He also a member of the Arts & Sciences Alumni Association Board and serves as their Treasurer.
 
While attending KCU, he was on the Theatre Staff of the University Playhouse, (3 years), the Technical Director of the Resident Theatre at the Jewish Community Center, (3 years), and a Supervisor of the Performing Arts Programs for the City of Kansas City, (3 years). He has continued to participate in the performing arts.
 
During this period, he married Bettie Jean Culp of Independence at the First Presbyterian Church on June 5, 1948. They have four children, Gregory, Wayne, Sylvia (Samantha) and Cynthia (Cindy).
 
Upon graduation from the University, he was employed by Consumers Cooperative, Inc. (now Farmland Industries) as an Accountant in their Oil Production Division, from June until October, 1951.
 
In October 1951, he joined the firm of Sinderson, Little & LaShell, CPA.
 
In October 1957, he left the CPA firm to join Chrysler Corporation as an Assistant Regional Controller in their Budget Development Program.  His service area covered Nine States and South America.
 
He received his Certificate as a Certified Public Accountant in July, 1959.  He is licensed to practice in both Missouri and Kansas.
 
He became a Lecturer (Faculty Member) in the Business School of Kansas City University, now University of Missouri at Kansas City, UMKC, in September 1961 and taught accounting and allied subjects until June 1968.
 
He Left Chrysler Corporation on January 3, 1962 and opened his own office as a CPA in Englewood Shopping Area in Independence, MO.  He is still practicing as a CPA in Englewood.
 
When his sons Gregory and Wayne became Cub Scout age, he was Cubmaster at St. Cyril's Church in Sugar Creek, Mo., then the First Methodist Church, Ottawa, Ks. and finally at the Englewood RLDS Church in Independence, Mo.  As the boys grew older, and moved on to Boy Scout Troop 207, He became Assistant Scoutmaster for many years to Joseph Katzman, who had been his Scoutmaster.  He was a Merit Badge Counselor in fifteen subjects for many years. He also served as Wagon Wheel District Advancement Chairman for one year and was in charge of the District Lifesaving/Swimming program for twelve years.
 
He joined the Inter-City Kiwanis Club and later moved to the Independence Rotary Club of which he is still a member. He is a Mason.
 
He was a co-founder of the Independence Square Benefit District and the Bingham-Waggoner Historical Society as well as Chalice Press, the Publisher of NEW WINE FOR CHRISTIANS TODAY, a non-denominational Christian Newspaper and Churches of North America Fellowship, an association of churches..
 
He is a life member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, he is also a member of the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Missouri Association of Tax Practitioners.  He was a Co-Founder of the MS/CPA Management of Accounting Practice Committee and the National MAP Conference in which he has participated for over 32 years.  He held offices and has been on the Board of Directors of the above organizations as well as the Independence Chamber of Commerce, Community Advisory Board of Public Television Station KMOS-TV at CMSU, Eastern Jackson County United Way, the Community Welfare (Service) League, Sunshine Center, Inc., Voluntary Action Center, Charter Bank of Independence, Boatmen's Bank of Independence, and many other organizations and corporations. He is a retired Member of IRPAC, a Congressional committee of the Internal Revenue Service.
 
He was the General Partner of Mid-America Cinema and an original investor in Jackson County Cable Systems, now Com-Cast Cable.
 
His wife Bettie has worked in his CPA Practice since 1962.
 
His son Gregory has a BA in Computer Science from UMR and a MA in Psychology from UMSL. He is a Computer Consultant and Programmer.
 
His son Wayne is a computer programmer and manages the data processing department of the CPA practice. (datacomp, inc.)
 
His daughter Sylvia (Samantha) has a BA in Psychology from Fontbonne College, a MA in Psychology from UMSL and has a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Pacifica Institute, Ventura, California. She practices in Leawood, Kansas.
 
His daughter Cynthia (Cindy) has a BA in Business Administration from Park College and has completed the work for a certificate in Massage Therapy.  She is employed as a Staff Accountant in his office.  She was employed as the office manager/accountant by Affiliated Therapies of St. Mary's, LLC, a subsidiary of St. Mary's Hospital, Blue Springs, MO.
